Hard Sell vs Soft Sell

I was thinking about this today as I was listening to a trainer speak and wondered if there are statistics that track the human condtion when listening to a hard sell vs a soft sell.

Personally I shut down when someone is trying to hard sell me into something. I prefer the soft sell; gimme the facts, why I need it, the price and let me make the decision. I have been un happy too many times when the hard seller crams something down my throat.

But the hard sell is still going on so it must work.

So if you are trained to be a hard seller and it goes against your grain, do you listen to those that have been effective selling the hard sell or do you do you own thing for ethics sake?

inquiring minds want to know.

  1. Chris,

I think you make a good point. I think most people prefer the soft sell. That being said, as a performance consultant to Fortune 500 sales teams, I’ve coached some hard sell sales people who do extremely well. What I’ve learned is you match your selling style to the personality of the prospect, and some people won’t buy with soft selling strategies.

I love your blog! Keep up the good work.

  2. Thank you Steve. Excellent point. Some people do need a bit of the hard sell to make a decision that they just may not know is good for them at the time.
